Standard Safety Operating Procedures in Bulk Transportation of Food

Trucking is undoubtedly the most preferred method of transporting bulk food products of either solid or liquid nature. The utilization of bulk food transportation methods has been for a long time effective and efficient. This sector is however quite sensitive and requires the implementation of proper standard operating procedures to keep the quality of transported cargo at its optimum while avoiding possible cross-contamination. The Use of Visual Inspection Procedures

Visual inspection of the truck utilized in the bulk liquid and solid food transportation is the first and most essential measure to take to that effect. When inspecting trucks and truckloads, standard inspection procedures define and outline critical steps that one should take. It is important that these steps are taken.

Interior Inspection

The first important visual inspection should be on the interior of the tank utilized for transporting the food. The interior should be free of any visible elements that would compromise the structural integrity of the truck such as cracks as well as corrosion of the metallic surface. Presence of cracks and corrosion on the interior surface of the truck is a clear indication of the possibility of the existence of contaminants which can compromise the quality of food. When inspecting the interior, it is also important to be on the lookout for unusual odor, foreign objects, mold, and any form of unacceptable condensation on the interior of the tank.

Residue and Interior Cleaning

The second important visual inspection element that should be emphasized on is the presence of residue even after sufficient cleaning process has been performed. Residue in the form of previously transported liquids or flakes sticking on the interior walls of the tanker is an indication of inadequate cleaning which could imply cross-contamination of the food product intending to be transported. Presence of such residue should prompt a complete cleaning of the tanker.

Loading of Food Cargo

When it comes to the loading of the truck with the food materials to be transported, care should be taken to ensure that all pumping mechanism utilized is appropriately sterilized and used within the technical and hygienic specifications required for the specific food products. A visual inspection of the pumping mechanism utilized should be comprehensively done to ensure that no inappropriate food residue compromises the food material to be filled in the truck.

Sealing and Securing the Truck

After the filling process is complete, the truck should then be procedurally and securely sealed. The sealing process should, among other things, ensure that any outlets are leak-proof. To enforce further security measures, it is important to use special tamper-proof seals which ensure that the seals are not tampered with and that the food items are not compromised or adulterated in transit.

Unloading of the Cargo

When unloading food material from a truck, care should be taken to ensure that any storage containment used is appropriately cleaned and inspected. The pumping mechanism should also be inspected to ensure that it does not contaminate the food. Following these procedures, among others, would ensure safe transportation of bulk foods using trucks.
